Report: DJ Wagner set to announce engagement soon

The race for 5-star prospect DJ Wagner is coming to an end.

247Sports’ Travis Branham reported Friday morning that Wagner, the No. 2 prospect for the Class of 2023, is expected to make an official announcement of his engagement as early as next week, with the landing destination expected to be Kentucky.

Wagner has been considered a lock on getting to Lexington for some time now. His addition to John Calipari’s Class 23 will give Kentucky the top incoming squad in the nation.

The Wildcats class already includes three other five stars, small forward Justin Edwards, center Aaron Bradshaw and point guard Rob Dillingham. 4-star combo guard Reed Sheppard rounds out the star-studded quartet.

Edwards, Dillingham and Sheppard have all signed their national Letters of Intent in the past 48 hours. Bradshaw is expected to do the same before the early signing period ends on November 16.

On October 21, Calipari alluded to Wagner’s commitment during the Greater Louisville UK Alumni Club Hosts Basketball Tipoff Luncheon:

“I can have another child where I trained his dad,” he said. “Now all of a sudden you’re like, ‘I’m coaching kids (of my former players)’.”

Calipari coached Dajuan, DJ’s father, during his tenure at Memphis. Wagner also signed an NIL deal with Nike, which of course is in partnership with UK Athletics.

In the report, Branham said his confidence in Wagner’s commitment to Kentucky was now “high”.
