Duncan Ferguson had been the favorite to take on the role at the Stadium of Light until it was confirmed he would stay at Everton to work under new manager Frank Lampard.

Instead, former Preston North End manager Alex Neil is among the bookmakers’ favourites. Grant McCann is also a top contender after being recently sacked in the wake of the Hull City takeover and he may be an attractive option given he won the Ligue 1 title with Hull City last season. last.
