How to Fix “Google Search Not Working” Issue on Android

restart cell phone

Sometimes the problem is minor and a simple restart will fix it. So, before moving on to other solutions, restart your device and check if that fixes the issues.

Check internet connection

Since Google needs to get the results from the internet, try opening a website in a browser on your phone. If that doesn’t work either, the problem is with your internet connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, restart your modem. Also try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Add the search widget

If the problem is only with the search bar or the search widget, you should try to add it back. To do this, delete the widget by holding it down and dragging it to the delete icon. Next, touch and hold an empty space on the home screen and select Widgets from the options. Look for the Google search bar. Drag it to the home screen.

restart google app

  • Open Settings on your Android phone and go to Applications/Application manager.
  • Tap on Google. On the next screen, tap Force stop.
  • Now try searching through the Google app or its widget on the home screen to restart the search service.

Clear Google app cache

  • Clearing the Google app cache has also proven useful for many users. To do this, follow steps 1 and 2 of the previous solution, i.e. go to Settings > Applications/Application manager > Google. Then tap on Storage followed by Clear cache.

Disable the Google app

  • Since the Google app is a pre-installed app, you cannot uninstall it. However, you can remove all updates and return them to the factory version by disabling them.
  • To do this, follow steps 1 and 2 of the Reset the Google app solution. But, instead of tapping Force Stop, tap Disable. A pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm your decision.
  • After disabling it, restart your device and follow the same steps again. Now tap Activate to get it back. Then go to the Play Store and update the Google app.

Update the Google app

  • Sometimes the problem comes from the application itself. So try updating the Google app from the Play Store. For this, open Play Store and search for Google. Update the app with the Google logo. Hopefully this should fix the issue.

Clear browser cache

  • Open Chrome on your phone and tap the three-dot icon at the top. Select Settings from the menu.
  • Tap Privacy followed by Clear browsing data.
  • Check the box next to Cached images and files. Tap Clear data.
